Men's Health Month: Let's Talk About Men's Mental Health

November is Men's Health Month - an opportunity to raise awareness of the physical and mental health challenges men can face, encourage open conversations and remind the men in our lives that it's always OK to ask for help.

Men's health is something we should talk about all year round, but November gives us an opportunity to shine a spotlight on issues that can sometimes go unnoticed or unspoken.

From mental health and suicide prevention to prostate and testicular cancer, there are many important areas of men's health that deserve greater awareness.

At Acorn by Synergie, we believe looking after people's wellbeing is important, both inside and outside the workplace. Whether it's checking in with a colleague, making time for a conversation or encouraging someone to seek support, small actions can make a real difference.

Why Is Men's Mental Health Important?

Mental health can affect anyone, regardless of age, background or circumstances. However, some men can find it difficult to talk openly about how they are feeling or ask for support.

Work pressures, financial worries, family responsibilities and personal challenges can all affect mental wellbeing. Recognising when someone might be struggling and creating an environment where people feel comfortable speaking up is an important first step.

We should continue to challenge the stigma surrounding men's mental health and remind one another that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Four Ways to Get Involved This November

There are plenty of simple ways to raise awareness, show support and encourage conversations around men's health.

1. Get Involved in Movember

Movember encourages people to grow a moustache throughout November to raise awareness and funds for men's health.

The campaign focuses on mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Growing a moustache can be a great conversation starter and help get people talking about important health issues.

2. Wear Blue

Wearing blue is another simple way to show your support for men's health awareness. Whether it's wearing something blue to work or encouraging colleagues to get involved, it's an easy way to start conversations and show that men's health matters.

3. Take 10 – Check In With Someone

Sometimes, the most meaningful thing you can do is take a few minutes to check in with someone.

A simple message, phone call or conversation over a coffee can help someone feel supported and remind them they are not alone.

Ask how someone is really doing, take the time to listen and let them know you're there if they need to talk. You don't need to have all the answers; sometimes, just being there is enough.

4. Find Out More About Men's Health

Understanding the signs, symptoms and support available can help encourage people to take their health seriously and seek advice when they need it.

Here are some useful organisations and resources:

  • Prostate cancer: Prostate Cancer UK provides information about prostate cancer, symptoms and support.

  • Testicular cancer: Cancer Research UK offers information about testicular cancer, symptoms and diagnosis.

  • Mental health: ANDYSMANCLUB provides free, peer-to-peer support groups for men.

  • Suicide prevention: Samaritans offers support to anyone struggling to cope or needing someone to listen.

  • General health checks: NHS provides information about men's health, health checks and when to seek medical advice.

For additional workplace mental health resources, Mates in Mind also offers information and resources to help raise awareness.

Creating a Supportive Workplace

Mental health doesn't stop when we walk through the workplace doors. Employers, colleagues and managers all have a part to play in creating an environment where people feel comfortable talking about their wellbeing.

Encouraging open conversations, checking in with colleagues and making sure people know where to find support can help create a more positive working environment.

We should remember that everyone experiences challenges differently, and sometimes people who appear to be doing well may be struggling behind the scenes.

Let's Keep the Conversation Going

Men's Health Month is a reminder that looking after our health should never be something we put off or feel embarrassed about.

Whether you grow a moustache for Movember, wear blue, share useful health information or simply take 10 minutes to check in with someone, every action helps raise awareness.

This November, let's challenge the stigma, encourage conversations and remind the men in our lives that it's OK to talk, it's OK to ask for help and it's OK not to be OK.

At Acorn by Synergie, we encourage everyone to look out for one another – not just this November, but every day.
